Training
It is a key requirement of the Ionising Radiation Regulations 2017 (IRR17) (and the Ionising Radiation Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2017 (IRR(NI)17)), together with related requirements for Radioactive Substances Activity (RSA) Environmental Permits and Radioactive Materials Transport (Class 7 dangerous goods) under the respective modal codes, that that anyone who works with Ionising Radiation receives suitable Radiation Awareness training.
The regulations also require that anyone appointed to the role of Radiation Protection Supervisor (RPS) (sometimes called Radiation Protection Officers in other countries) receives suitable RPS training appropriate to their role and duties. All of our training is designed to help employees understand their roles and responsibilities when working with radiation or helping to manage radiation safety at your workplace.

At L2, we typically deliver more than 60 Radiation Awareness/RPS training courses per year. All of our courses are undertaken on a live basis and can be given in person - either at your site or at our North Shields office or then for some of the more simpler ones be delivered via MS Teams. Our training courses range in length depending on the level of training required for your specific practice, ranging from a half-day course up to a three day course.
A number of the courses include practical training include sealed source handling techniques, good practice in industrial radiography, working with unsealed sources and emergency response/rehearsal of contingency plans.
Our training courses all cover the fundamentals relating to the nature and properties of ionising radiations, hazards/risks, biological effects, radiation monitoring and approach to the ensuring radiation doses will be As Low As Reasonable Practicable (ALARP).
The training will also cover key radiation protection regulations, applicable requirements to your activities and the approach to dealing with Radiation Accidents and implementation of your Contingency Plans.
We also provide additional training for clients who undertake radioactive materials transport, understanding of the security regulations, understanding of nuclear safety/regulation, environmental permit compliance, radioactive waste management and radiation protection on nuclear sites.
The client training of any form is always delivered by a radiation protection professional. All attendees receive a full set of lecture notes. The training is a mixture of presentations but also some syndicate exercises and for some courses includes practical elements relating to radiation protection.

As well as client-based training, we also run a number of public courses throughout the year at our North Shields office. The next public training courses are as follows:
- 2-day course covering Radiation Awareness/Radiation Protection Supervisor Training for Industrial Radiography: 12th – 13th November 2025
