Radon Gas
Radon is a colourless, odourless, naturally occurring radioactive gas that is formed from the decay of small amounts of naturally occurring uranium found in the ground in various types of rocks, soils and sometimes water, where it seeps out and can build up in below ground structures such as mines, pits, tanks and also into above ground structures such as houses, workplaces and public buildings like schools.

The concentrations of Radon Gas vary across the country depending on the local geology, ground conditions, ventilation, construction techniques and seasonal affects.
Indoors, where we spend much of our time, Radon Gas can accumulate to levels that present a significant health risk.
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) provides a UK Radon Map, a valuable first step for identifying the Radon Gas potential for a workplace or housing based on location. While not every building in a higher-risk area will necessarily have elevated Radon Gas levels, monitoring is the only way to confirm whether action is required.
If levels are high, mitigation measures such as passive or active Radon Gas sumps can be used to reduce concentrations and hence radiation doses.
At L2, we support Employers in understanding, measuring, and controlling Radon Gas related doses. As a HSE-recognised Radiation Protection Adviser (RPA) Body, we ensure compliance with the Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017 (IRR17), which requires that HSE is notified if work is carried out in an atmosphere containing Radon Gas at annual average activity concentration in air exceeding 300 Bq/m3, which then requires Employers to comply with IRR17 including appointment of a suitable RPA.
By combining regulatory expertise with practical solutions, L2 Business Consulting helps organisations maintain safe, compliant workplaces and protect their workforce from this invisible but significant hazard.
Our Services
We provide a full range of radiation protection support for Employers and Organisations working in high Radon Gas potential areas, including:
- Radiation Protection Adviser (RPA): L2 is an HSE-recognised RPA Body.
- Radon Risk Mapping: Identifying whether your premises or site are located in Radon Gas affected areas.
- Design of Radon Monitoring Programmes: Developing tailored strategies for Radon Gas Detector monitoring programmes.
- Implementation of Monitoring Programmes: Supplying and deploying passive Radon Detectors (passive and real time) to provide accurate assessments of average Radon levels. L2 have in-house IRR17 compliant calibrated real-time Radon Gas monitoring instruments that can be used to take initial Radon Gas level measurements ahead of a long term monitoring programme.
- Development of Radiation Risk Assessments, Local Rules, and Contingency Plans.
- Support for HSE/HSENI Notification Applications: Assistance with regulatory notifications where Radon Gas levels exceed regulatory thresholds.
- Personal Dosimetry advice, including Approved Dosimetry Services (ADS) using Radon Gas Dosimeters and dose assessment via calculations based on Radon Gas levels and exposure times..
- Remediation and Engineering Controls: Advising on and supporting the implementation of mitigation measures including passive and active ventilation systems.
- Incident Investigation & Ongoing Support: Guidance in the event of elevated results, non-compliance issues, or employee health concerns.
Training Services
- Radiation Awareness Training
- Radiation Protection Supervisor (RPS) Training
