Oil and Gas
Within the Oil and Gas sector, there are several activities involving ionising radiations/radioactive substances which may occur in both onshore and offshore oil and gas industry facilities which are subject to regulatory control including:
- Well Logging.
- Installed Gauges used for process control.
- Industrial Radiography and other forms of NDT.
- Use of radiotracers.
- NORM (Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material) – access to working areas with NORM, decontamination of NORM contaminated equipment/plant and assessment, management and disposal of NORM related wastes.

Our Services
We provide a comprehensive range of radiation protection support and advice to the Oil and Gas Industry including:
- Radiation Protection Adviser (RPA): L2 is an HSE-recognised RPA Body.
- Radioactive Waste Adviser (RWA): providing advice on RSA Environmental Permit compliance matters including management, arrangements, environmental dose assessment, environmental monitoring, waste sampling/analysis and demonstration of Best Available Techniques/Best Practicable Means.
- Support with Radiation Monitoring, including instrument selection, calibration, and testing and environmental monitoring programmes.
- Expert advice on examination, maintenance, and testing of plant and equipment that are used to maintain radiation safety.
- Guidance on designation of areas, including handover of Radiation Controlled Areas and Radiography Equipment.
- Development of Radiation Risk Assessments, Local Rules/Radiation Safety Procedures, and Contingency/Emergency Plans to comply with UK and international legislation.
- HSE/HSENI Registration and Consent Certificate applications including preparation of Safety Assessments. We have also helped prepare licence/permit applications for work in non-UK locations to various international regulatory requirements.
- Assistance with Radioactive Substances (RSA) Environmental Permit applications for Sealed and Unsealed sources including compliance, storage, and security arrangements.
- Radiation Accident and Investigation support such as accidents involving radioactive sources and or potential overexposure.
- Expert advice on Class 7 dangerous goods Radioactive Materials Transport, including appointment as Dangerous Goods Safety Adviser (DGSA).
