Radioactive Waste Management
The L2 team supports existing and prospective generators of radioactive waste by providing advice on all the technical and regulatory aspects of radioactive waste management including generation, retrieval, sampling/monitoring, characterisation, segregation, treatment, packaging, storage, transport and disposal of low level, intermediate level and high level radioactive wastes.

We have decades of practical hands on experience of working in the nuclear and non-nuclear sector for client issues surrounding radioactive waste management. L2 can offer Customers comprehensive support to ensure effective management of radioactive waste at all stages of a project by providing advice on the waste stream characterisation (including undertaking sampling and analysis), application of Waste Hierarchy and demonstration of documented Best Available Techniques (BAT)/Best Practicable Means (BPM) to ensure radiation doses radioactive waste management activities will be radiologically optimised (i.e. As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA)).
For Waste Strategies, our team have been involved in facilitating optioneering workshops, development of specific waste stream strategy reports (site specific and national) and development of Integrated Waste Strategies for both operating, decommissioning and new nuclear build sites.
In addition to appointment as RPA and DGSA by clients we are also appointed as Radioactive Waste Advisers (RWA) under UK regulations to provide advice to clients who apply for and utilise Radioactive Substance Activity (RSA) Environmental Permits.
Talk to us about our Radioactive Waste Management Services

Our team have been involved in the development of a number of Waste Studies at all stages of projects in the UK and internationally for nuclear, oil/gas and various industrial sectors including inadvertent import of radioactive waste into the UK of materials with low levels of environmental radioactivity contained within goods/products.
We have worked on the development of a number of key assessments/reports for various clients including waste treatment, packaging, storage and disposal studies along with Waste Acceptance Criteria (WAC) compliance reports and Letter of Compliance (LoC) development for future disposal to the Geological Disposal Facility (GDF).
For both future nuclear new build and radioactive handling facilities (e.g. NORM and Sealed Source Management) we have helped clients with the design of radioactive waste management facilities including interim storage as well as preparation of Decommissioning & Waste Management Plans (DWMP), Liability Cost Estimates including benchmarking to UK/international norms and undertaking peer review of technical approaches and estimates for clients.
