Environmental Permitting
L2 helps our Customers meet the regulatory requirements for those practices which involve Radioactive Substances Activities (RSA) which may require an environmental permit/authorisation or use of an environmental exemption from permitting/ authorisation. This typically includes work with radioactive substances that has the potential to pollute the air, water or land.
At L2 we are experienced in providing advice to Clients on how permitting applies to them and implementing the specific regulatory requirements, as well as interaction with the environmental protection regulators in your area which can include Environment Agency (EA), Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA), Natural Resources Wales (NRW) and Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA).

Our strength lies in our radiation protection team who have extensive experience in the development of Radioactive Substances Activities Environmental Permit applications for various sectors in the UK including the required underpinning environmental dose assessments (including use of EA IRAT, PC Cream 08, Microshield, ERICA and EA R&D128), demonstration of the application of Best Available Techniques (BAT) to ensure radiation doses from activities will be sufficiently optimised (i.e. ALARA) and the required demonstration that the application is a suitable Operator including organisational arrangements, environmental leadership, management systems and culture (called Management Arrangements) as well developing approaches for sampling, monitoring, analysis, development of Operating Techniques and Accident/Incident Management Plans.
L2 had applied for, varied and surrendered a number of environmental permits/authorisations across the nuclear and on-nuclear sectors. We can assist with the completion of the relevant forms and advise on regulators typical response schedules and costs following submission. L2 employ a number of Radioactive Waste Advisers (RWAs), who clients can appoint to provide advice as required by the permit/authorisation.
